Today is first day of Hispanic Heritage Month
What Is Hispanic Heritage Month?
A period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic/LatinX to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
Did you know?
The U.S. Hispanic population reached a record 60.6 million in 2019, up 930,000 over the previous year and up from 50.7 million in 2010. In the United States, many Latinos are of both Iberian (primarily Spanish) and Amerindian ancestry (Mestizo).
Hispanic or Latinx
Hispanic refers to a person from, or a descendant of someone from, a Spanish-speaking country.
Latino/Latina/Latinx refers to a person from, or a descendant of someone from, a country in Latin America.
How to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
Share history, heritage, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latinx Americans of past and present. People use this celebration to show the importance of Hispanics in many ways. You can donate to Hispanic and Latinx charities, support Hispanic-owned businesses, eat food from the countries we celebrate, and learn from their cultures—Additionally, honoring influential Hispanics who made an impact on society.
Why I Care
I'm half Mexican, I feel it's my responsibility to amplify and celebrate this month and help educate those who may not be aware of its meaning. I will continue sharing prominent and impactful figures from the Hispanic and Latinx communities over the next month on social media (@NuevaLuxe on all platforms), so feel free to follow along.
